What makes the film so memorable is its rich, authentic characters, its gripping sequences, and its many fascinating sub-plots in the narrative. Repetition is present as the viewer returns to Hogwarts for another school year, and the main trio, Harry, Hermione, and Ron, are growing up alongside one another with the viewer. The viewers follow Harry on his journey from leaving the Dursleys to finding out his parents had been betrayed to performing a Patronus charm to save his godfather’s soul from the Dementors, who take every good feeling and happy memory from a person. For the first time in the series, in the part ‘Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban’, the viewer learns more about the backstory of Harry’s family.

J.K. Rowling and Alfonso Cuaron want the viewer to be more mature as they grow up alongside Harry, as the tone of the source material becomes darker and grittier. A beautiful scene between Harry and Lupin on the wooden bridge of the Hogwarts grounds symbolizes the warmth and caring nature of Lupin’s character. When Lupin says to Harry “Your mother was there for me at a time when no one else was”, Lupin feels Harry’s pain, he understands Harry is unlike any other professor in the castle for he was a loyal friend to his mother and father, and he tried to find his purpose in the world (YouTube Films, 2013, 46:45).

When we learn that Sirius is Harry’s godfather, there is a feeling of euphoria and relief for Harry. The dialogue is by far the highlight of this film for its beautiful structure and emotive feelings. When Sirius needs to leave Hogwarts before he is detected by the Ministry, he says to Harry: “I expect you’re tired of hearing this, but you look so like your father” (YouTube Films, 2013, 2:03:46). The viewer instantly loves Sirius’ character as he is a beloved father-figure to Harry and the only family he has left. He was never attempting to inflict pain on Harry, he was trying to protect him all this time.

The Time-Turner narrative in the film is the most exhilarating aspect of the narrative. What makes this narrative element so memorable is that the sequence grasps the viewer’s attention from Cuaron’s point of view. Adam Chitwood states in his article ‘Why ‘Prisoner of Azkaban’ Is the Best ‘Harry Potter’ Movie’ that “the time travel aspect never feels like it’s overshadowing the story of Azkaban, and yet it is endlessly compelling no matter how many times you’ve seen the film” (Chitwood, 2019). What Chitwood outlines here is that even though there is a repetition in the time-travel plotline when Harry and Hermione need to fix everything that has been broken, it never seems uncompelling.

When viewers watch the film on repeat, they find new details they had never noticed before, which is why Rowling and Cuaron are the perfect combination for storytelling.
