Harri Jussila defines time management as the key that makes a person able to be productive (Jussila, 2011). Students use time management skills to prepare a school planner (daily, weekly, or monthly plan) to improve their studying performance and avoid late submission of any assignment. Students can finish and achieve their to-do lists by applying time management. And, time management is used to decide the priority of student’s work list (Eva D, 2015). And it helps students to study and do more work in less time.

Personal Experiences

I. Challenges:

Good time planning helps students avoid and prevent many studying challenges that students may face during the college period. These challenges could be one of the following:

    • Students may face study stress when they have a lot of academic work to do like assignments, quizzes, projects, or exams. In that case, students do not have enough time to fulfill other academic duties and obligations.
    • There is no specific timetable similar to what they used to during secondary school which can cause some issues like spending time outside in lecture periods, procrastination in the implementation of college-works, or non-compliance with the times of lectures.
    • Students also may face academic challenges such as difficulty in studying English as a second language or the difficulties of using modern learning technology at the College or University. In addition, the challenges of using creative and critical thinking in the study instead of memorizing.
    • Another challenge students face is meeting conflicting deadlines when they have more than one exam or assignment with the same deadline date.

II. The Importance of Time Management:

Time management distinguishes a successful person from others, great goals are not without management and organization of time, and the most important points that illustrate the importance of time management are shown below:

    • Time management helps in the balancing of goals and duties and makes a person more confident in whatever he does. When a person has the skill of time management, he can determine his responsibilities to achieve his goals, and what he must do in a specific period of time in order to accomplish his goal.
    • Time management helps people to achieve more goals in a shorter time. When a person organizes his time, he can do more work compared to those who work randomly without time control.
    • Knowing how to manage your time means that you will be able to achieve more in short periods of time with minimal effort. Think about how much you accomplish when you really focus. Prioritizing tasks and matching them with time is one way to do more with less effort than trying to do deep work.
    • Time management is an essential element of effective management, and it leads to work in an organized and coordinated manner.
    • Time management plays a significant role in the prevention of the dispersion of ideas, mission implementation delays, or confusion during any task.
    • Time management is important while determining the required tasks that a person has to accomplish in a given time. And, it would make the person satisfied with himself and happy in his life and make his life easier.
    • It is essential in the process of decision-making to use time management skills to make the most appropriate decision.
    • People face challenges while achieving their goals, but time management can detect errors and prevent them from occurring.
    • Many people have great goals to achieve, but without understanding the importance of time management, these goals can be shelved indefinitely. For example, one of your goals is to pursue a healthier lifestyle, but you cannot devote time to the gym, probably the time you need is already there, you just have to find it by saving enough time to take care of your health in this case you can make the necessary changes quickly.

III. Time Management Techniques:

There are several time management techniques that I used to use in order to accomplish my goals. The first technique is making goals list and dividing these goals into two categories: long-term and short-term goals. Long-term goals require a longer time to achieve (years) while short-term goals are for a shorter time such as days, weeks, or months. After defining goals, I make a list of priorities to work on and start immediate implementation. And, I divided my leisure time commensurate with my needs which helps me to avoid wasting time.

This second time-management technique is thinking about how you want to see yourself after 5, 10, or 15 years, whether at work or in social life, and planning it now for you to reach your goals in the future. This helps you to determine specific goals in your life timeline and organize your time based on them.

To be successful in life and make a great contribution to the world, you should have targets that you are working hard to achieve. I have many personal goals in life that I hope to accomplish in the future, and here are some of them. One of my goals is to start my own company (business), and I want to be the founder and CEO of my company. My company’s aim is to be known in the international market and has a good reputation. Another goal is to learn other languages (French and Spanish). I want to speak French and Spanish fluently. One of my goals is to travel to ten countries before I reach the age of 50 years. These countries are France, Spain, Japan, the United States, Turkey, the United Kingdom, India, China, Italy, and Mexico.

Important Skills

There are soft and hard skills, soft skills are very important for people to use in college while studying, working, and in daily life activities and they can improve their soft skills by attending skills development programs and training courses (Arat, 2014). Soft skills play a significant role in students dealing with other academic staff or other students, and employees with their employers. There is a growing demand among employers for graduates with soft skills, or so-called employment skills, that reflect people’s behavior and help create an atmosphere of interaction among others in an intangible way, such as social intelligence, communication skills, and negotiation, and does not depend on their acquisition of educational and traditional curricula. Soft Skills are the most important factor for most employers. These are the skills that the job market of graduates seeks from different educational programs. They are used to deal with others. They include daily life skills such as communication and interaction with others, the ability to adapt to any environment, and the desire to learn through experience. There are several important skills required by employers, which students and I must acquire and improve during college years, and here are four of them:

    • Time management: we can improve this skill by taking responsibility in multiple areas during undergraduate or secondary education and gaining professional work experience through training, volunteering, or other opportunities.
    • Communication skills: students have to prepare themselves with sub-constructs of communication skills which include verbal, written, and social communication before they enter the working environment (Iksan, et al., 2012). We should improve our voice tone, facial expressions, sitting way, listening skills, appreciation of others, and talking style because they contribute to our acceptance or rejection of working workplace, even if we have years of experience.
    • Ability to work on a team: students should develop this skill to work effectively, efficiently, and appropriately with others in many ways, including participation in sports, student service activities, extracurricular activities, and cooperation in graduation projects during their senior year of study.
    • Leadership skills: the development of leadership skills not only helps to find a great and good job but also helps to get promoted in the work. Leadership skills can be improved by being involved in any group or organization in college, and leading and encouraging other students to accomplish anything important.

We should take advantage of years of study to acquire some personal skills, which pave the way for us to work so that we are strongly qualified to join the job market after graduation.


Time management plays a significant role in avoiding many studying challenges that students may face during the college period, and it is the key to goals achieving. Successful people are those who have goals and work hard to achieve them in life and make a great contribution to the world. Time management, leadership, communication, and teamwork ability are essential personal skills that students and employees should acquire and improve. They can acquire more of these skills in many ways, including participation in sports, student service activities, extracurricular activities, cooperation in graduation projects, professional preparation training, engagement with teachers for references and professional recommendations, and participation in internal exhibitions, workshops, trips, and community initiatives.
