The movie Johnny Mnemonic is basically a movie based around the character Johnny. The movie is about an implant that Johnny got in Singapore that allows him to be a courier for digital data which is located at the back of his head. Johnny is tasked with a client to carry some very important data from China but what he doesn’t know is that there are other interested parties, namely The Yakuza, that want to get their hands on that same information. Johnny also makes the big mistake of carrying more data than his storage can handle and so he must download the image as soon as he can otherwise, he is going to die. His handler, Ralphie, betrayed him and was working with the Japanese Mob group.
Johnny gets a bodyguard named Jane who helps him fight off his enemies. She also introduces Johnny to Spider who is a doctor and turns out to also be Dr.Allcome who can help him download the data. The doctor also discovers that the data Johnny is carrying is apparently the cure for NAS (a global massacre) made by a scientist in PharmaCom. Sadly, the doctor is killed by an assassin sent to kill Johnny and therefore they have to look for another alternative. Luckily before the doctor died, he told Jane to take Johnny to Jones. When there they discovered that Jones, the only hope they had was actually a dolphin. They are then attacked by the Yakuza again but they are able to fight their way through it with the help of ‘J-Bone’ and his crew. Jones helps Johnny to download the data which in turn saves his life. The cure for NAS is then released to the world.
Technology causes harm to people but we can’t get rid of it because we can’t live without it.’ This phrase in the movie is a clear prediction of our current lives at the moment. Technology has brought a lot of good things with it but we all know that everything has its advantages and disadvantages. We have seen some of the disadvantages that come with technology for instance global warming, pollution etc., but still, we can’t just simply get rid of it because we need it. In the movie, we also see the use of AI and V.R. especially when Johnny is trying to find answers about what he is carrying. This in itself is a future prediction that can be related to the recently launched Metaverse. There are also scenes where some A. It has been used, like the case when the Yakuza boss pretends to be the client and arranges the meet-up with Johnny. This can also be termed as a future prediction because of the advanced technology that is now being used in the world and military to fight crime. The use of Advanced technology is a clear prediction of what the future would hold and it has certainly come true in the modern world today.
The case of human beings getting implants that can help them carry information from one point to another as couriers. This is one of the things that has not come true from the movie simply because in the modern day we have hard drives and flash drives that one can use to transfer information from one computer to another. Apart from the physical output devices, one can alternatively send information online more safely thus not requiring a courier. The act of using human beings to carry large amounts of data is also dangerous as seen when Johnny is transporting more data than his implant can actually accommodate this is life-threatening to him, because if he does not get the information from his head downloaded as soon as possible then he will end up dead. The other case is about Jones the dolphin that helps Johnny to crack open the code and download the data from his head. In the movie, they used animals to perform their intelligence and solve some advanced cracking that humans find hard unlike now in the modern world where animals are not actually used to perform that kind of intelligence for human beings. In the modern world, it’s actually human beings that take care of their own intelligence problems and cracking of codes, there has not yet been any discovery of animals that help crack codes like Jones. So according to the director’s prediction, this is another thing that is actually false.
I liked the movie because despite it being a rather old movie, it still had some outstanding technology. Some of the things I noticed in the movie are still used to date like for instance the AT&T mobile service provider. The Internet service also is another key factor because it is something still in use today. Despite it being a good movie, it also definitely has some flaws, for instance, I feel like despite the movie having a great message to portray, the level of acting wasn’t the level best, and some of the scenes are quite exaggerated.
