A highly debated issue as of late is the topic of competitive team sports in schools. This is my look on this topic. First of all, it’s crystal clear to me that everyone has a different point of view so not everyone will agree. Second I honestly HATE sports so obviously I am biased but this is from my research, not my imagination and I will put the links to my sources at the end of each paragraph.
The first reason for the day is the death rate. I’m going to use (American) football for the most part and my 1st and 2nd evidence comes from Tetongravity.com
So to start (finally) you’re actually 10 times more likely to die playing football (1 in 50,000) than bungee jumping (1 in 500,000). However, inversely you’re even more likely to die while canoeing (1 in 10,000).
Also, 3 kids died in the first 9 days of March 2011 Randomly due to cardiovascular problems no one bothered to check for. And even if they checked they might miss it. They can’t anyway because then they might find a cardiovascular problem that doesn’t even exist. Another problem is budget and time, to quote a better argument article, “ When Marguerite Roza, the author of Educational Economics, analyzed the finances of one public high school in the Pacific Northwest, she and her colleagues found that the school was spending $328 a student for math instruction and more than four times that much for cheerleading—$1,348 a cheerleader. “And it is not even a school in a district that prioritizes cheerleading,” Roza wrote. “In fact, this district’s ‘strategic plan’ has for the past three years claimed that math was the primary focus.”(link:https://www.theatlantic.com/magazine/archive/2013/10/the-case-against-high-school-sports/309447/) That’s right I did it so sue me. Anyway, this proves my point. School is apparently a place to become smarter and more successful. But this makes it look like it’s a place for sports and like a gym. If math is your priority then make it seem like it is. It is not right to claim that math is your priority and then turn around and spend more on cheerleading. There’s more of this I’m certain. Quote again “Athletics even dictate the time that school starts each day: despite research showing that later start times improve student performance, many high schools begin before 8 a.m., partly to reserve afternoon daylight hours for sports practice.” Look at this. You want this or an extra 4.5% increase in grades according to https://www.washington.edu/news/2018/12/12/high-school-start-times-study/. I know what I prefer.

If you know me then you also know I hate swearing and there is foul language mentioned everywhere.
It’s a problem and can be handled by shutting sports down along with some rule changes. I love how one area in this article is handled. It sums the problem up very well. To quote it once again “the superintendent brought in to rescue one tiny rural school district did something insanely rational. In the spring of 2012, after the state threatened to shut down Premont Independent School District for financial mismanagement and academic failure, Ernest Singleton suspended all sports—including football.
To cut costs, the district had already laid off eight employees and closed the middle-school campus, moving its classes to the high school building; the elementary school hadn’t employed an art or a music teacher in years; and the high school had sealed off the science labs, which were infested with mold. Yet the high school still turned out football, basketball, volleyball, track, tennis, cheerleading, and baseball teams each year. Football at Premont costs about $1,300 a player. Math, by contrast, costs just $618 a student. For the price of one football season, the district could have hired a full-time elementary school music teacher for an entire year. But, despite the fact that Premont’s football team had won just one game the previous season and hadn’t been to the playoffs in roughly a decade, this option never occurred to anyone.
“I’ve been in hundreds of classrooms,” says Singleton, who has spent 15 years as a principal and helped turn around other struggling schools. “This was the worst I’ve seen in my career. The kids were in control. The language was filthy. The teachers were not prepared.” By suspending sports, Singleton realized, he could save $150,000 in one year. A third of this amount was being paid to teachers as coaching stipends, on top of the smaller costs: $27,000 for athletic supplies, $15,000 for insurance, $13,000 for referees, and $12,000 for bus drivers. “There are so many things people don’t think about when they think of sports,” Singleton told me. Still, he steeled himself for the town’s reaction. “I knew the minute I announced it, it was going to be like the world had caved in on us”. Get fudged sports.
