To keep you on track with your term paper assignment, I have several checkpoint assignments that will
count as participation assignments and go towards the participation grade in this course. By completing the
assignments on time, students will understand how best to manage their time over the course of the term.
The instructor will provide feedback to the students in order to avoid a path that may be problematic to the
final quality of their papers. By correcting misconceptions and mistakes along the way, students should be
well prepared to submit a quality paper by the deadline.
This checkpoint assignment is the creation of an annotated bibliography. The purpose of the annotated
bibliography is for you to analyze and critically think about the quality and usefulness of your sources. For
this assignment, you will list the reference for your source in APA format. Then you will write a brief
paragraph that summarizes the content of your source, evaluates the quality of the source (including any
biases or problems with reliability), and finally how you plan to use it in your paper.
I will review these bibliographies and discuss with you any possible problems you might have with your
sources. This will serve to ensure that the researched content for your papers is of high quality. Students
who do not submit this assignment often score poorly on their final paper, so I HIGHLY recommend the
thorough completion of this assignment so that I may give you appropriate feedback before you submit your
final paper.
CHOOSING YOUR SOURCES
Remember you will be choosing at least three sources for your paper, and describing one of these
sources in detail for your presentation.
Again you must find articles within the reputable news publications that details a scientific experiment(s) in
a field of natural science. Your articles may be about biology, chemistry, physics, geology, etc. The articles
must be at least 200 words long and must have been published in the last ten years. Sources for this
assignment may include primary peer-reviewed scholarly journals, reputable online newspapers, or
reputable online magazines. Below is a list of potential sources (however, you are not restricted to using
these websites):
ScienceDaily: http://www.sciencedaily.com/
NPR Science News: http://www.npr.org/sections/science/
The New York Times Science Section: http://www.nytimes.com/pages/science/index.html
National Geographic Daily News: http://news.nationalgeographic.com/news/?source=hp_news_header
Scientific American News: http://www.scientificamerican.com/section.cfm?id=news
The Scientist: http://www.the-scientist.com/
Discovery News: http://news.discovery.com/
Live Science: http://www.livescience.com/
Science News: http://news.sciencemag.org/
Nature News: http://www.nature.com/news/
Unacceptable sources for this assignment include personal websites, blogs, and wikis. Please be
aware of inherent bias in some publications. For example: naturalnews.com is unlikely to give a fair
and unbiased representation of any health issue, whereas who.int (world health organization) is
likely to give you objective statistics and information that is rigorously reviewed before publication.
If you need help determining validity of sources, please review the tutorials on the library website, speak to a
librarian in person, or speak to me. There are search guides available on the library website to aid you.
Avoid articles that do not describe a scientific study. Encyclopedia or general information sources
should not be used other than introductory purposes. For example, articles that provide historical
information, describe a scientific career, describe the mission of a scientific organization, articles about new
technology, breaking news about an event (such as a natural disaster or awarding of scientific prizes)
related to science or technology, opinion articles on scientific progress, or articles that detail a list of
scientific discoveries do not meet the requirements for the assignment. If you are unsure as to the quality of
a source, do not hesitate to bring it to me for evaluation, preferably in office hours.
Do not forget, the library employs people to help you with your research. If you are struggling to find
appropriate sources, start by looking at the Lynn Library website for any helpful tips and guides to aid you in
your search. If you are still struggling, do not be afraid to ask the library staff to help you research. PubMed
(a quality search engine for medical literature) is now available for students. Please ask your librarian about
using this tool.
Please submit the annotated bibliographies as a word document or
PDF.
