Classical music has a reputation for being a bit snobby. To be fair, I have met my fair share of classical musicians who have the most expensive instrument possible and play in a way that it’s easy to tell that they think they are better than everyone else. Maybe they’ve been playing their instrument for their entire life because their parents forced them into it when they were young. My parents never forced me into anything and my general introduction to classical music was quite different.

My sister and I used to watch Barbie movies religiously. One of my favorites was Swan Lake. I remember watching that movie so many times and loving the music. Not really knowing that the music was something other than background noise in the film, I was content with just watching and listening. In fifth grade, I started playing the flute in my school band because I loved how it sounded. At some point, I began to gain a better understanding of music, and through this, I found out I loved Swan Lake and Tchaikovsky. Due to the number of times I watched the Barbie movie and listened to the music, it quickly became my dream to play in an orchestra and play Swan Lake. It’s hard to explain what this ballet means to me, but it is ingrained in my love of classical music.

My “obsession” with Swan Lake is something I like to spend lots of time on. I’ve often played the flute part of the ballet. Sometimes, I will play the whole orchestra part on my headphones and play along. It’s like playing with the orchestra, but not quite. I also own the complete study score. My friends sometimes lightheartedly make fun of me as the book beside my bed is a ballet score. I don’t care though. I love to listen and follow along. I could do it for hours.

My love of Swan Lake has motivated me as a classical musician. I know that if I want to play Swan Lake in an orchestra it’s going to take a lot of work. However, I love it so much it’s not work at all. It doesn’t matter that I didn’t actually start taking lessons until I was a freshman in high school. It doesn’t matter that I can’t sleep in on weekends. My 9 A.M. to 1 P.M. college prep class and 12 A.M to 2 P.M. flute lesson in Boston are worth it. I leave each even more inspired to continue working towards my dream. Sometimes, if I’m really stressed, having a bad day, or my flute playing isn’t going how I want it to, I’ll play the piano. It’s my comfort instrument. There is no pressure since I don’t compete in it and do it purely for myself. I just sit down and start playing Debussy or Chopin from memory and it relaxes me. Sometimes, I’ll play the piano adaptation of the Swan Lake ballet. Afterward, I go back to my homework or practice with a new sense of determination and focus. Classical music has a way of touching everybody, and for me, it does that in Swan Lake. There is such a diversity of moods in the ballet, so however I’m feeling I can find a way to relate it to a specific piece. I’m so glad I watched the Barbie movie as a young child because throughout my life Swan Lake has given me great joy.
