The moment a sea of sticky fingers, dirty faces, and havoc jolted towards me, because of my presence, I knew this was a place I wanted to be. I volunteered at a local elementary school in my community, Eldredge Elementary School. I worked on arts and crafts with first through fourth graders whose families have lower incomes, throughout the winters of my sophomore, junior, and soon-to-be senior years. The program was set up to give children a sense of direction and lead them into the correct bearing. I decided to participate in this particular community service organization since I attended Eldredge, and felt like I needed to give back to where I was at one point. The arts and crafts program occurred once a week for two hours. As a major aspect of volunteering, I discovered each child’s interests and planned accordingly. I surveyed the children and their outcomes gave us an idea of their interests, so the organization can satisfy them the most. The arts and crafts we did were knitting, making t-shirts, coloring, drawing, and much more. The most memorable occasion was when DJ, a student who had been going for a while, disclosed to me that he dislikes returning home since his family can not manage the cost of dinner every night however when he is with me he disregards his battles and has a great time.
The achievement from community service that I am most proud of is the work I did to help sort out a monthly get-together with various children other than the ones that go to Eldredge. This monthly get-together brought kids from the other elementary school, Hanaford Elementary School. This granted the children I worked with week after week to meet different students and collaborate, this was amazing because the vast majority of the children were modest. This month-to-month occasion pulled in nearly thirty-five more new kids, it gave open doors for kids that were timid to meet children in similar situations. This occasion was significant in the fact that it gave a chance to other children to collaborate with kids in a manner they are not frequently used to. This caused the activities to be increasingly fun and pleasing to the youngsters. These monthly occasions pulled more children every single week. Something that I am also proud of is I sorted out other high schoolers to fill the shoes of different volunteers and my shoes when we graduate.
As a result of my community service, I gained experience and involvement with children. I figured out how to collaborate with kids fittingly, make lesson plans, and provide activities for the kids’ interests. Working with kids could be challenging on occasion, however, it forced me to value that not all kids are happy to try my work. This made me ready to work harder to make something suit each kid’s needs.
To conclude, volunteering at my local elementary school, Eldredge Elementary has been a groundbreaking experience. By working with children and running unique workshops, I turned out to be better at directing a group of kids. Consequently, I got more children and young adults intrigued and associated with community service, especially arts and crafts. My enthusiasm for working with kids has grown, and I anticipate studying to become a teacher the following fall. Community service had an enormous decision on my career path and I can not start to say thanks to Eldredge enough for this opportunity. This opened doors and molded the rest of my life. I knew spilling glitter and drawing over myself with markers would be helpful one day.
