Introduction
Jackie Robinson was the first African American to play for a Major League Baseball team. Jackie Robinson broke the color barrier in 1947. He was a very talented athlete. In college, Robinson played football, basketball, baseball, and ran track and field. When he joined the major league baseball team called the Los Angeles Dodgers nobody wanted him to play on a major league baseball team because of his skin color, it was hard at first but he got through it. Over the years more and more black baseball players were welcomed on a major league baseball team. He has a lot of accomplishments to be happy about.
Early life
Jackie Robinson was born in Cairo, Georgia in 1919. Jackie had four siblings, a sister named Willa Mae Robinson, three brothers named Frank Robinson, Mack Robinson, and Edgar Robinson. Jackie Robinson attended Cleveland Elementary School, Washington Middle School, John Muir High School, and UCLA college in Los Angeles California. In high school and college, he played football, basketball, baseball, and ran track and field. In 1942 Jackie was drafted into the US military. In 1944 he was court-martialed after false accusations by the prejudiced officer and jury that confirmed his removal from the military. Not long after that Jackie started playing baseball.
Personal life
Jackie Robinson’s mother, Mallie Robinson, single-handedly raised all five children, Willa Mae, Frank, Mack, Edgar, and Jackie. They had little money therefore, in Robinson’s third year of college, he withdrew to help his mother take care of the family. Over the years Jackie Robinson has encountered a lot of prejudiced people. Jackie Robinson and Rachel Robinson got married in 1946 and had 3 kids. Jackie’s kids’ names are Jackie Robinson Jr, David, and Sharon.
Main accomplishments
On April 15, 1947, Jackie Robinson was the first black baseball player to play in the American major leagues during the 20th century. Jackie played for the Los Angeles Dodgers. Jackie Robinson broke the color barrier. He was named the national league rookie of the year, he was also named MVP. Jackie Robinson led the Brooklyn Dodgers to six championships. Robinson was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame. Among his accomplishments was raising his batting average to 342; earning 203 hits, 16 home runs, 124 runs batted in; leading the league in stolen bases (37); and placing second for doubles and triples. On October 21, 1997, Jackie Robinson died due to a heart attack.
