The Hate U Give ​by Angie Thomas is written in an angry tone at the oppressive systems, and it helps the reader to better understand the main character Starr, and her conflicts based on what she is living in the moment. In chapter four Staar thinks about talking with the police or not, her thoughts are “On one hand, it’s the cops. It’s the cops. It’s not like I’ll be telling just anybody. On the other hand, it’s the cops. One of them killed Khalil” (Thomas 55). Thomas uses the biggest conflict of the book which is the death of Staar’s best friends to create an angry tone, not just in the main character but also in her community. Starr living in these different worlds; where she lives and where she studies makes her confused and we can see more of her thoughts and her social commentary gives the novel an unfair tone in the face of tragedy and the characters must fight every day. By having these conflicts and tones the novel is more critical and represents an unfair reality that happens with real families around the world.

In ​The Hate U Give, Angie Thomas uses hyperbole to represent how loud her scream was and how desperate she was feeling. In chapter 2, after seeing her best friend be killed by One-fifteen, Starr doesn’t know what to do besides scream. She represents this feeling through “An ear-splitting scream emerges from my gut, explodes in my throat, and uses every inch of me to be heard”(Thomas 23-24). Here Starr is using hyperbole to express how loud she was and spread to the reader how scared she was. An ear-splitting means that she yells with all her strength and people would split, it’s a hyperbole because she is exaggerating the scream based on her own fears. This hyperbole in Chapter 2 establishes Starr’s fear, and worry, and helps the reader better understand this unjust feeling of prejudice and how is to be black in a racist society.
