Bullying is an act of aggression, intimidation to seek harm, or coerce someone perceived as vulnerable. This undesired behavior can be displayed in different ways, such as making fun of people and picking on appearance, race, religion, social status, and sexual identity among others. Physical, verbal, psychological, and even cyberbullying, all have the same effect on individuals, some stronger and hurtful than others. Children in school often feel afraid, stressed, depressed, or anxious, making them feel alone and even have thoughts of hurting themselves or others. There is an imbalance of communication between teachers and students, how teachers let the unraveled emotions between the bully and the victim continue making it repetitive.
A bully’s behavior can be outgoing and aggressive, they tend to be in control of others, have very poor social skills, and usually do not care about people other than themselves. From the ages ten to fifteen, I was bullied during school by a group of girls that made sure I was getting picked at the moment I would get to class. I developed anxiety and stress at such a young age due to bullying, I was a humble and quiet child. This is an unwanted behavior, having to experience that growing up in school and at home repeatably, I developed anxiety throughout the years until I reached a breaking point, depression. Battling anxiety and depression at such young age, I started believing it was my fault that I was the problem, calling me offensive names. This negativity impacted my life and created so many problems until I realized that our society, including parents and teachers, has affected our generations.
Kids can be mentally scarred. This was becoming a problem as I grew older, it became a trend, and bullying was ‘cool’, after reading the Washington Post article on McKenzie Adams just comes to show bullying does not stop. McKenzie Adams was a 9-year-old girl from Linden, Alabam. “‘She was being bullied the entire school year, with words such as ‘kill yourself’’, the 9-year-old’s aunt, Edwina Harris, told the news. She was also told, ‘You think you’re white because you ride with that white boy’. Harris said, and called ‘ugly’ and other unprintable epithets” (Isaac Becker). This abuse appeared to be racially motivated by a 12-year-old boy. Bullying may seem harmless until one exposes actions. This topic is one of the hardest I can relate to, it is a very sensitive matter, an issue that is causing mental harm and physical damage. At that age, all you want to do as a child is play and make friends, go to school, and just be a normal kid.
Many students are afraid to speak up, to share what they go through in their everyday lives. They find it hard to report any type of incidents at school or home, most people live in fear of what might happen next, or who will get hurt next. People in school judged my appearance and background, I wanted to hide and quit going to school, I never was the type to fight back. However, I was not able to do so, though I was going through the same issue at home, being bullied by my own family. My mother was very strict, but she refused to defend me whenever I would get picked at by my siblings, it was not the normal type of sibling relationship, it was verbal and physical. She would not let me out of the house if it was not for school, she made sure I went directly from school to home, and she believed she was protecting me so that I would not turn out like herself, my older brothers, and sisters.
Bullying cannot be explained, one has to experience it in order to understand it, at some point, anyone can be the bully or the victim. Many people who have been bullied and struggle with depression, commit suicide, orchestrate shootings, and bully others. Bullies are frequently motivated by feelings of frustration and negativity. This could be caused by the human tendency to dislike those who are different from us and a lack of empathy towards those who are attacked. There are many different ways to stop bullying. Start by identifying the factor and addressing the attacker, putting a stop to it in a socially amicable behavior, and preventing bullying starts at home. I believe if parents and teachers communicate often, this could be prevented. Parents being involved in school activities, sports, church anything of their interest can help prevent any sad event from happening.
There is a reflection that needs to be acknowledged for it has become very apparent that there is an imbalance of communication between teachers and children, which results in an environment that does not prevent bullying from ever taking place.
As a result of being bullied, I now struggle with anxiety and shut myself out, it was difficult trying to overcome such a tragic event in my life.
