On April 23, 2017, my life changed tremendously. I found out that I was pregnant with my first baby girl named, Chloe Bri’elle Solomon. On that same day, my family, and I were very shocked and emotional because I announced sitting on my living room couch. At that same moment, I thought I let my whole family down because I was the youngest of 6 and the rest of my siblings graduated from high school and moved on to college. I thought to myself that I couldn’t finish high school and actually told my mom that I couldn’t. My mom told me that I could and it’s not an option, I’m going to get my diploma. My mom, sisters, and brothers all hugged me saying,” Everything is going to be alright and we support you no matter what”. I was still attending Buchtel Community Learning Center as a junior and I was only 17 years of age. As I thought to myself what was I going to do, I don’t know anything about taking care of a baby. My boyfriend’s name is Aamir Solomon and he is the father to my child as well.
We have been together since my freshman year of high school. Aamir attended Buchtel Community Learning Center as a star basketball player but he transferred to Copley High School his senior year. I called Aamir on the phone I was pregnant and he got emotional because we were both young. Aamir talked to his mom about me being pregnant, and she was upset because she wanted Aamir to go off to college and get that experience. His mom thought that Chloe would slow things down for him but not college. Attending doctor’s appointments, planning a baby shower, and giving birth were all new to me and very exciting. I gave birth on October 10, 2017. Senior year had just started, and I was going to school from home for the first semester. My best friend, Yahna Davis had called me on the phone and stated that one teacher up at Buchtel was talking about me saying my life was over, and I wasn’t going to graduate. I had peered at Buchtel as well, saying that I wasn’t going to graduate. I called my dad and told him I was pregnant and he told me that I wasn’t going to finish school and had a baby to take care of. So, I’m at home on my laptop, doing my homeschool assignments thinking to myself this stuff is hard, I need an actual teacher in front of me to explain these assignments. I closed my laptop and didn’t do work for three days straight. One day my mom came into my room and asked me have I did my school work and I told her no. My mom told me to get up and go work on my school work or I was going to believe my doubters and be what they said I was going to be and let my baby girl down if I didn’t graduate.
I got up from my bed, went downstairs, and opened my laptop. I proceeded to do my work and I tried my best and worked so hard that I passed my first semester with an A in English, a C in Precalculus, and a B in Science. On January 18, 2018, that was the day I returned back to school, some people were shocked, and some people were happy to see that I made it back. I went into the girls’ bathroom at school and my name was written on the bathroom wall. It said,” Chaunte C is a dropout and needs to learn how to take care of her baby”. I just laughed and that didn’t bring me down not one bit because they were so jealous of me that I returned to school. I made sure that I was on time and completed every assignment, and exam that I needed to graduate. I will never forget about my principal Ms, Glover, my counselor Ms. Ramsey, and other teachers because they really helped me out while I was in school. If it wasn’t for my mother and sisters motivating me I probably wouldn’t have graduated. I met all my state requirement tests, got all my credits, and was graduating on time.
May 31, 2018, I walked across the stage, tears falling down my eyes, with my cap, and gown on, wearing a sash for being a Project Grad Scholar. I received my diploma and a letter from the State of Ohio General Assembly. I also received a 4,000 dollar scholarship to attend the University of Akron in the Fall of 2018. Working at Akron Children’s Hospital the whole summer of 2018 was just something to do before going to college. I chose to attend The University of Akron as a full-time student and put my two weeks’ notice in at Akron Children’s because I couldn’t work, attend school and take care of Chloe at the same time. I thought to myself that I really made it after people doubted me from school and my own father. Aamir also received his diploma and scholarships, and now is enrolled in Owens Community College. He is playing basketball and majoring in nursing.
This memory is important to me because some girls drop out of school when they become pregnant and give up that easily. I have a big support system like my mother who watches my baby and take care of her when I go to my college classes, and my three sisters as well. My doubters didn’t know that I could accomplish this goal, and I did. This memory is also important because graduating while pregnant, it can be done you just have to believe, stay strong, and fight for what you want. I accomplished this goal not only for my doubters but for my baby. I want to be a good example for her and make sure she gets her diploma, goes off to college, and becomes something in life. It has definitely shaped me because I never gave up, and I was determined to get my diploma. When I drive by my high school, I chuckle because the people that attended and that one specific teacher really prayed on my downfall. This is why I am in college striving for my nursing degree and going hard for Chloe Bri’elle Solomon.
