It’s the first day of tenth grade and I couldn’t be more excited. I wake up. Happy as can be for a fresh start to a new school year. After having a good first year of high school I tell myself I am going to do better and new things this year. One of those things is playing volleyball. My family has always had good volleyball players, my brother was a starter on the CPHS volleyball team for some time now, and my uncle Mike won silver at provincials in 1986. So I decided hey why not give it a shot? First-class rolls around and all my friends who play volleyball are excited once I tell them the news. I go to the gym door and sign myself up, it reads “Junior boys volleyball first tryout tomorrow”.

The rest of the day goes like any other first day goes, reuniting with friends you missed over the summer. The next day I can not wait to get this first tryout out of the way. Obviously coming from the family that I came from it was not easy living up to the expectations that people had for me, and I was nervous. The bell for the last period rang and school was over. Time for the tryouts. After the first tryout, it was obvious I had nothing to worry about. I was a good athlete and figured things out and learned things quickly, so this task was not that challenging. I made the team and our first tournament was at RMC in Kingston. That was going to be my first taste of volleyball action outside of school.

We arrived at RMC and I was disappointed to not be starting but I knew I would get plenty of action throughout the day. I got my first start of the day and I was pumped to finally be playing that my family has a love for. Of course, the first game I played was against our rivals and only competition Perth. We won the game and I played great for my first time being out there, so great in fact I proved to my coach that I should be a starter. Winning against Perth was not easy, it was a dirty battle and chirps were flying left and right. We knew all season Perth was going to be dirty and come at us with everything they got so we had to be prepared for everything.

The season was ending, and we were where we wanted to be. We did not lose a game all season but every time we played Perth it was a hard-fought win. Playoffs were right around the corner and we secured home-court advantage. My first volleyball season could not have been going any better. I was putting together an MVP-type season. The next week’s practice was grueling, and we had to put in twice as hard if we wanted to win. We knew teams were going to come at us with everything. Being the best puts a target on your head and every team wanted to beat us. We rolled threw our first game and now it was time for the big show.

Perth and us in the finals. We knew they were going to come out swinging as they had nothing to lose unlike us, we were the first seed and had to win or the season would have been a waste. Perth shocked us and dummied us in the first set and if it was not for a late rally that got the boys hyped we could have thrown the whole thing. In the second set, we came out with a fire and destroyed Perth easily, but we knew the tiebreaker was going to be difficult. Both teams played their best but at the end of the day, we had too much talent and took home the title.
