I will identify the systematic barriers that were shown in the film Crash. Also, I will explain how these barriers and biases affect the perceptions of at least three characters in the film which are Daniel Ruiz, Farhad, and Cameron Tyler.
Daniel Ruiz is exposed to a systematic barrier during his encounter with Jean when he was hired to charge the door lock. In the film, Jean said, The guy with a shaved head, the pants around his ass, and prison tattoo (Crash., 2004), which is a racial stereotype that demonstrates how Daniel tends to have limited job opportunities due to his physical appearance. Farhad is a Persian man who faces Islamophobic remarks made by the gun store owner and others. Not only does he face racism but his own convenience store gets destroyed. His insurance on his store claims he’s responsible for his own store damage due to his negligence in understanding and speaking English. Lastly, Cameron Tyler became a victim of police brutality alongside his wife Christine. The fact that the police officer Ryan was racist led to Cameron being targeted because of his skin color and ethnicity. At work, Cameron must follow the order of his colleagues because he faces being excluded from them and job opportunities.
Daniel Ruiz’s perception of Jean’s biased attitudes caused him to become frustrated. He realized just because you move out bad neighbor doesn’t make you any more safe than you thought. Farhad’s perception went from wanting to protect his family and his store to anger and revenge. In his eyes, Daniel was the reason why he became a victim of systematic barriers. Toward the end of the film, his perception changes as soon as he thinks he killed Daniel’s daughter. He becomes thankful for Daniel’s little daughter because she reminded him of an angel. Finally, Cameron’s perception towards the police went from respectful following the officer’s orders toward aggression and lashing out against other police officers.
In this part of the crash reflection essay, I will reflect upon my cultural identity in which I will analysis on how my personal and cultural presuppositions affect my values and relationship with my classmates. Lastly, I will discuss what it was like to watch the film with a diverse group of students.
Being a Hispanic female who was raised in a Catholic household tends to influence my values and relationships with my classmates who are different from me. In the Hispanic culture, there are two important values that I was taught growing up which are respect and dignity. Being respectful has allowed me to develop deep personal friendships with my classmates who are different than me. I was raised in the Hispanic tradition which deals with making friends with the same sex while being cautious with the opposite sex. These cultural values have caused me to become more comfortable making friends with same-sex. Yet, I still manage to develop friendships with the opposite sex. For example, when a professor asks us to partner up with classmates for an in-class activity. I tend to pick females instead because I don’t feel nervous around them. An aspect of belonging to a minority population has allowed me some insight into how people are treated in our society. This insight has allowed me to become more active with my classmates. Coming from a traditional Catholic household has allowed me to be more grateful toward my classmates because they have different values due to their cultural identities.
Watching the film with a diverse group of students was quite interesting because many of our classmates experienced these types of systematic barriers. I felt comfortable watching the movie with my classmates because we are a diverse group with different values. Since it was my first time watching Crash, my classmate discussed the scenes with me after class on the systematic barriers in the movie.
