Why did I select this skill to reflect on? Why is this core skill important for your development (personal and professional)? (use relevant theories and concepts from psychology and business to support your answer)

I chose to reflect on my public speaking skills because public speaking is something I am fearful of and find challenging, but I think it is important for success. Public speaking can be defined as ‘the action or practice of addressing public gatherings; the making of speeches’ (Oxford English Dictionary Online, 2007). Many university students report fear and anxiety about public speaking. Being able to control these fears is an essential tool for survival in the corporate world. (Marinho et al., 2017).

Reflect on your current competence regarding this skill. How did you assess your competence? (use your self-assessment findings, feedback from peers and your tutor, plus your own reflections on your thoughts, feelings, and behaviors to answer this question)

To accurately assess my current competence in public speaking would require that I give a speech to a group of people. While this cannot be done right now, I can use the feedback from my peers and lecturers throughout the term. I was told by one of my lecturers that I appear confident when addressing a group of people, but I tend to talk too fast. This is because I find myself trying to speak as fast as I am thinking as I do not want to forget what I am planning to say. During a constructive feedback session with my peers, they also said that I sometimes talk too fast and that I could have better eye contact with the audience. I agree with this as I tend to find myself looking at my notes or script for a large portion of the time that I am speaking. I believe that I can address a general audience competently, but if I am speaking to unfamiliar people, I get very anxious.

Can you identify any contradictions from your analysis above? For example, is there a match between how you see yourself and how others see you, or not?

A contradiction I can identify from my analysis of my current public speaking skills is that others perceive me as confident. I feel anxious when I must speak publicly and do not feel that others see me as confident. This is most likely because I think that others have a more negative perception of me than they do. I also see a contradiction in how fast I think I am speaking and how fast others perceive my speech. Even when I attempt to slow down my speech, others still think I talk too fast. I will think that I am talking at a good pace, but others do not think I am.

How might this skill help me in the future? (use references to support your argument)

Stronger public speaking skills will make me a more desirable job applicant. Large companies are attracted to applicants who can competently speak in public. (Marinho et al., 2017). Public speaking is seen by many employers as an essential skill to have. 96% of employers said participation in meetings is important to job success, with 36% of those employers saying oral presentations are used constantly and often. (Crosling and Ward, 2002). With stronger public speaking skills, I will excel in work meetings and have more success and influence when speaking to an audience. Learning public speaking skills such as clear speech, body and facial language, and a degree of confidence is ‘required in order for the presenter to maintain the interest of the audience, and therefore communicate successfully’ (Crosling and Ward, 2002:54).

In the future, assertiveness will help me be a stronger leader and have more satisfaction in life. Henman says that ‘effective leadership demands dominance’ and leaders must be assertive and aim to influence others to turn ideas into actions (2005). Practicing assertiveness will not only help me become a more effective leader but also increase my life satisfaction. There is a positive relationship between life satisfaction and assertiveness in university students studying business. (Lounsbury et al., 2009). This may be because assertive people are more honest with their feelings and wishes and are not afraid to speak up for themselves. When put in a situation where I do not like something that is going on, assertiveness will allow me to express my thoughts without being aggressive and help me influence the situation.
