Moreover, firms often window-dress their accounts to improve the outlook of the financial statements and mislead investors. If I were an accountant, I would present the financial status of the firm in a true and fair view, as well as take action to minimize the loss made by firms. As firms can survive the pandemic, it will result in a lower unemployment rate which will stimulate the economy. I aspire to be an accountant as accountancy is the language of business. For this reason, I have chosen IAL Mathematics with two statistics modules and Chemistry as electives to learn to work with numbers and think critically. In order to gain a better idea of the field, I am also studying IAL Accounting and participated in several accounting courses outside of class, for example, ‘Introduction to Accounting’ organized by the Chinese University of Hong Kong in 2020. During the course, I not only studied theories about financial and managerial accounting but also had discussions about real-life applications, for example making use of breakeven analysis to decide whether to open up a restaurant, using leverage and profitability ratios to examine the performance and financial status of major airlines of China. Apart from that, I also acquired knowledge about accepting or rejecting special orders and outsourcing, as well as cash budgeting to set targets and identify the problems that firms may face ahead. From this course, I understood the importance of accountancy and valued it as the soil of firms because accounting information not only tells the story of a business but also is the first step in making any decisions that aid the growth of firms.
