Dreams and goals are not the same. The difference between dreams and goals is that dreams are ideal goals, while goals are realistic, measurable, and attainable. Although they are very similar, some significant differences still exist. Dreams can be anything from ideas to pure fantasy. Dreams may never be possible, but goals are plans to actually make something happen.

Dreams are anything a person can imagine. It can be as fantastic as time travel or as common as having a family. If you watched the original ‘Star Trek’​ show you can tell the creator were ambitious dreamers. They dreamed what space would look like before anyone had even been to the moon, let alone another solar system. They inspired technology that we use every day such as Facetime, the iPhone, scanners, Siri, and tablet computers. The men who imagined the technology in ‘​Star Trek’ ​didn’t make any of the technology they just dreamt it.

At that time John F. Kennedy made a speech at Rice University promising to put a man on the moon before the end of the decade, scientists started to make goals. They had to figure out how to make spaceships, the fuel required for those spaceships, how much force it would take to get off the ground, and the trajectory to land a spaceship on the moon. They planned dates to launch rockets, to test objects, and to perfect their technology. From all of the goals, planning, and timing they finally landed a man on the moon on July 20, 1969. Goals need to be specific, measurable, and realistic. Goals don’t work if you don’t know what, how, and when you’re going to do it. Dreams inspire goals. My dream today might be the next iPhone in 25 years. Dreams are the imagined finished product and goals are the steps to achieve the finished product. I dream of becoming a film director. I have already started making goals to make my dream come true. I have made a variety of videos on social media. I am currently enrolled in an advanced film class. My latest goal is to get accepted into a top film school. In order to make all my dreams come true, I realize I’ve got to make goals and achieve them.
